Under 6s
If you and your child are new to Rugby you are sure to have lots of questions.  We have put this information together for you in the hope that it will answer some of those questions.  If you have any other queries don’t hesitate to contact our minis co-ordinators
What are the differences between Walla rugby and Mini’s Rugby?
“Walla” Rugby is for age groups under 6 and under 7 and is a non-tackling introduction to the game of rugby which allows children the opportunity to use the ball by combining the skills of passing, catching and running.
Walla rugby rules are two handed tag with 7 players per side. Games are 2 halves which are 15 minutes long and played on a quarter size field.
Mini’s Rugby is for ages under 8 and under 9, and introduces players to a more free flowing game of running and passing action. The elements of tackle, ruck and maul are introduced. The game is played with 7- 10 players aside and on half field. From under 9’s up players learn the techniques of defence and attack and positional play.
Who can play?
Rockdale Rugby takes all children, girls and boys from ages 4 and up. With the success of Girls Rugby 7's and it now an Olympic sport more and more girls are interested in playing. Competitions for girls are slowing growing and Rockdale Juniors would love to field girls teams. Any girls interested in playing are more than welcome to join any team.
How do I know what Age Group my child should register for?
The age requirement for rugby in team age groups is by the age your child turns the year that they play, for example if your child  turns 8 in December 2018 then they would be in the under 8’s for the 2018 season.
How much is registration and what is included.
Registration for the 2018 season is FREE. The only cost will be to purchase club shorts at $25 and socks at $20.
What equipment do I need to provide?
Your child will need a pair of football boots.  Mouthguards are strongly encouraged and are mandatory for Under 8s and above.  Headgear is optional.

When and where will my child play?
All U6 – U9 teams play some Friday night games generally starting around 6:30pm and Saturday mornings between 9:00am to 1pm.
Games are held at the various home grounds of the Southern Districts clubs.  Your team manager will give you details of the drawer and game venues once the season begins.

When is Training?
Training is on Wednesday from 5:30pm at Rockdale’s home ground, CA Redmond Oval. This is for all age groups including Juniors (see Juniors page for further information).

Who are the coaches?
The coaches at Rockdale Rugby are all parents.  All coaches of Under 8 are required to be Smart Rugby qualified under the ARU.  If you are interesting in assisting in coaching or managing a team, please contact the minis co-ordinator Jacqui Amy or speak to a member of the commitee on training nights.

How long is the season?
The 2018 Season runs from the weekend of 1-3 April until the end of August 2018.
Other things you may like to know:
There is no competition table for these age groups, they play each week with no results recorded. At the end of the season there is a Southern Districts Gala Day where game results are recorded and a team from each age group wins the championship, all players receive an award for participating in the season.
Throughout the season the under 8 and under 9s have the opportunity to participate in Gala Days with teams from around Sydney.
The Club has a variety of events throughout the year, including the annual Pizza Night for the kids after training on a Wednesday night. This has been a great success and something that the kids look forward to.
